RIP Sridevi: India’s Female Superstar – Here Are Some Facts About The Bollywood Icon You Must Know

Goodbye Sridevi: India’s first female superstar dies at 54, due to massive cardiac arrest.

The sudden demise of Bollywoods first female superstar Sridevi has sent shock waves across the country. It will be hard for her fans to forget her bright eyes, lovely smile and sprightly personality.

Veteran Bollywood actress Sridevi died after suffering massive cardiac arrest in Dubai on Saturday. She was 54. Her husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi were with her at the time of death. She was with the entire Kapoor family in UAE to attend the wedding ceremony of Mohit Marwah. Her elder daughter Janhvi did not attend the wedding because of the shooting schedule for her upcoming Bollywood film ‘Dhadak’.

Sridevi was born in the year 1963 to Ayyapan Yanger and Rajeswari Yanger, and was named Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan. Her father was a lawyer.

With Solva Saavan, Sridevi made her foray into Bollywood as the lead actor in 1979. Sridevi also did playback singing for films such as Sadma (1983), Chandni (1989), Garajna (1991) and Kshana Kshanam (1991).

Not many know that Sridevi has turned down the offer of Steven Spielberg. The director considered her to play a brief role in Jurassic Park (1993). However, she said no owing to Bollywood projects.

For two of the most important films in her life, Sridevi was the second choice. Nagina (1986) was first offered to Jaya Prada and Rekha was considered for Chandni. Sridevi actually spelt her name as Sreedevi, but she never corrected the spelling of her name in film credits. She was especially noted for her impeccable timing as a comedienne.

Sridevi’s iconic Bollywood movies include Sadma (remake of Moondram Pirai), Mr India, Chandni, Chaalbaaz (in a dual role with Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth), Khuda Gawah (double role of an Afghani mother and daughter, opposite Amitabh Bachchan), Lamhe, and Gumrah.

Later, she took a 15-year-long break from movies in 1997, a year after her marriage. She returned in 2012 with English Vinglish. Sridevi stunned fans with her performance as a villainous queen in “Puli”, which also marked her comeback to Tamil cinema after a gap of more than two decades.

On her Twitter handle, Sridevi – who had last retweeted a performance on a originally picturized on her as a tribute to the Bollywood diva – preferred to describe herself as “Actor-MOM-Housewife-Actor Again!”
